Volunteer Opportunities
Your
experience required. Tutor K-3rd graders
that teachers have selected as needing
special assistance. With one hour of extra
help a week, a child can enjoy reading
instead of struggling with a book. Through
Off Our Rockers, it’s easy to make a
difference in a child’s life.
Why be an Off Our Rockers volunteer
Volunteers benefit from knowing they are
helping a younger generation, while
providing school children with extra
attention and emotional support.
And there are benefits created just for our
volunteers
¾
educational programs and literature, annual
recognition prize drawings, maximum
flexibility, and, of course, opportunities
to meet people with similar interests.
But most important is the help given to
children in need. Teachers and school
administrators select students who can most
benefit from positive role models. Studies
show that children who receive this type of
extra attention respond with better
classroom attitudes and improved test
scores. Off Our Rockers volunteers regularly
tell us how their attention and
understanding increase self-confidence and
learning ability in the children with whom
they work.

Who can be an Off Our Rockers volunteer
It's easy and
fun to be an Off Our Rockers volunteer with RSVP. A volunteer is
anyone who is 50+ years and is willing to give one hour or more each
week to work with one or more children. No special skills are
required to be a mentor, only a desire to help at-risk
children develop the skills necessary to become strong and
productive adults. In addition to having a strong desire to help
these children, tutors
must have reading skills. An application, references, interview
and criminal background check are required of all volunteers.

Examples of Off Our Rockers activities
Volunteers can be involved either as tutors
or mentors:
Tutoring - Volunteers work
one-on-one with a child and concentrate on
improving the student's reading skills using
a structured plan.
Mentoring - Volunteers work with
children to improve their self-esteem
through accepting relationships. Activities
include sharing life experiences, reading,
playing games, telling stories and working
on art projects.

Training for Off Our Rockers volunteers
Training
sessions are on topics that enable the volunteers to enhance their
skills in mentoring or tutoring children in elementary schools.
Training sessions are held annually for both mentors and tutors at
sites accessible to volunteers. After participating in training,
volunteers can be placed in schools conveniently located to their
homes. Ongoing support is provided to all volunteers by our staff.
